My love of photography began with the gift of a small Brownie camera when I was ten years old. Growing up in a small town in Canada, I always felt a desire to explore and travel beyond the borders I knew as a child. Strangely enough, the opportunity to follow these dreams came as a competitive baton twirler. I practiced for endless hours to master the art of baton twirling, eventually winning both the Canadian and American Twirling Championships.

Together with my sister Barbara, we added a twist to the usual routine, lighting the ends of our batons on fire while traveling as a synchronized performing stage act. After making our television debut on the Ed Sullivan show, we seemingly overnight had invitations to perform around the world. Suddenly, we were traveling from country to country as diplomats of sorts, making connections across cultural boundaries — whether introducing baton twirling to an eager group of Japanese students in Tokyo or traveling with Bob Hope and the CBC to entertain UN troops stationed around the Gaza Strip.

Standing on a busy street corner in Mumbai early on, I realized my years of travel as both a performer and natural observer had also trained my eye to this medium. As I dedicated more and more of my time to photography, the same determination to hone my craft took hold of me. Like before, I committed hours of practice and rehearsals to better refine my reflexes and sense of timing.

Photography is like performing; you learn to read an audience and make quick adjustments before a magical moment is lost. I believe a truly great photograph establishes a strong sense of connection with the subject — whether it be people, wildlife or landscapes — and in turn with the viewer. I hope you feel this as you travel through my website.

I have won many awards both locally and nationally and my work has been published in Fodors Travel books, National Wildlife, National Geographic, and many other publications.
